The MAVS Basketball Club is all about the kids.
Basketball should be fun to play and fun to compete in. Players should enjoy being a part of the team. It was always fun for me and I was fortunate to be able to play for a long time.
We are teaching basketball, competition and life skills as we help form our young men and women. The MAVS program gives young people an opportunity to create their passion while having fun and getting better.
We field multiple teams per grade at several different levels and in two leagues, so that everyone can play at the level appropriate for them, be successful, learn, and have an opportunity to move up. Each grade level has from 2 to 4 teams, depending on how many players we have.
It is our job as coaches to continue to help the young players improve. All we ask from them is their effort, desire, hustle and work ethic. They can only improve if they bring these traits to each practice and to each game. It is the players’ decision as to how high they want to take it.
We work on all of the fundamental basketball skills, but we also want our players to learn and understand the game itself. We play an up tempo style with the fast break and a lot of running. They can score, but they also have to find their open teammates and pass the ball.
We play an aggressive defense – mostly man to man, which teaches them all parts of a zone. Defense is a team game, not an individual one. A player has to trust his teammates and be part of the team to succeed.
In my time, we played on the playground to pick up these instincts. In my experience over the last eleven years, the players pick it up pretty fast.
I know that I have helped a player when a parent tells me that their son or daughter goes out and works on their skills at home to get better, and when they are happy to come to practice and get excited for the games.
Thank you for your support of the MAVS.
